    About Sheffield

We love Sheffield and the surrounding areas and are keen to encourage graduates to train to become teachers here, obviously we are biased - so here are a few reasons why so many of us stick around.

With just over half a million people, Sheffield is the 4th biggest city in England.

It comes with all the benefits you’d expect – good transport and great opportunities for sport, culture and nightlife – plus a whole load more.

You might not know that:

  •  One third of the city lies within the Peak District National park – you can literally walk out of the city centre along green corridors into the Peaks.

  • Sheffield has more trees per head of population than any other English city – 9 per resident in case you were wondering!

  • Sheffield has the largest theatre complex in England outside of London.

  • The English Institute for Sport is based in Sheffield.

  • There are numerous mass participation sporting events every year.

  • Sheffield is the climbing capital of England with access to superb outdoor climbing and numerous indoor walls.

  • Sheffield has been crowned as the ‘real ale capital’ of the country.

  • The Full Monty, Def Leppard, Human League and the Arctic Monkeys all come from Sheffield.

  • Sheffield has its own curious dialect – you will quickly find yourself using ‘mardy,’ ‘mithering,’ and ‘9 while 5.’

Starting out on a teaching career there are over 140 primary schools and 28 secondary schools to choose from, making it easy to start and develop your career without having to re-locate.

Your teacher salary will of course also go a lot further in Sheffield than it will in many parts of the country.
