How to Apply

If you are not yet ready to apply, you can attend one of our open events where you can gain insights meet the team and spend some time in classes.

We will also be able to give you information about our training packages and give advice on how to prepare for the interview.

If you are ready to apply please follow the steps below:

Stage 1: Before Applying

1. Research and prepare. You can find out about the SCITT route into teaching by heading to the Get Into Teaching page. Make sure you have all your documents and certificates together and details of your work and education history.

2. Choose the course you would like to study. Information about our courses can be found on our primary courses and secondary courses pages.

We offer QTS only and PGCE with QTS. For more information about these options please visit our PCGE page or our FAQs page.

3. Make sure you have the correct qualifications for the programme. Our entry requirements can be found here for our primary courses and here for our secondary courses.

4. Consider how you will finance your training: There are student loans available to help with living expenses and tuition fees. If you live in England then you need to register with Student Finance England.

There are bursaries and scholarships currently available for some subjects. You can check if these apply to you here. If you are thinking about applying for a scholarship, then plan in advance as you need to make the application directly to the Sponsoring organisations.

If you require additional help from Student Finance to complete your training, you should check out your eligibility before applying.

5. Write your personal statement. Your personal statement can be a maximum of 4,000 characters or 47 lines of text, whichever limit you hit first. If you’re waiting for Apply to open, get ahead by drafting your personal statement, so you’re ready to copy and paste it into your application.

Stage 2: Application Stage

1. Search for the course you would like to apply for on The Department for Education’s search tool. To view our teacher training courses you should filter the results by using:

  • Our postcode: S10 3BT

  • Our name: The Sheffield SCITT

  • The subject or phase (primary secondary) you want to teach

2. Once you have found the course, you'll need to apply via Apply for teacher training. This site is easy to use and gives clear guidance to help applicants make strong applications. More information can be found on the Get into Teaching website.

As we are not allowed to hold a licence to sponsor visa applications you will need to be a UK citizen or have been granted “Settled Status” by the U.K. Home Office.

If you are not a UK citizen you will need to prove you have access to Public Funds or have the ability to support yourself financially during your course prior to being offered a place.

International Trainees

Stage 3: The Interview

If you have been shortlisted for interview, we will update your application on the Apply for teacher training site and we will invite you to an interview.

All interviews will be carried out by at least two members of the SCITT team and follows the following format:

  • An observed 15 minute teaching activity for secondary, 10 minutes for primary. Details of this will provided upon invite.

  • A reflection on your teaching activity

  • An informal assessment of your Maths and English proficiencies. This is not a test -it is there to identify any gaps that may need to be addressed during your training year.

  • A formal interview. This involves questions about the teaching role and the subject/phase you are interviewing for.
