Tom Day, tells us about his experience of training to become a teacher with The Sheffield SCITT.
One of our fantastic SCITT trainee's Tom Day, has secured a job at Notre Dame High School in Sheffield as a Physics teacher.
When did you start to apply for jobs?
Luckily this was the fist job I applied for and was in my host school. I started in January
How have you found your training year with The Sheffield SCITT?
I’ve loved it, being able to spend so much time in the classroom and have constant feedback from experienced teachers has really improved my confidence as a teacher.
Personal highlights?
Getting thank you cards from students at the end of my first teaching placement.

What did you find most challenging?
To begin with, time management. It surprised me how long planning would take. But, the observation weeks really helped with this as it allowed me to find my feet.

Did the training put you in good stead for applying for teaching positions and going to interviews?
Absolutely! Because I had spent so much time in the classroom, I felt really confident talking about my skills , experiences and development as a teacher during interview. The SCITT has allowed me to constantly reflect on my teaching and find ways to get better. This meant I had plenty to talk about in my application and interview.
